Using your lived experience to create change in the community

Below you will be provided with some scenarios you may be faced with as a community champion. Remember, it is your lived experience that makes you the expert, so use this!

If you are stuck on ideas, use the points you have listed previously as these are some pointers as to what you are aware of and lived through because of your disability.

Scenario 1:

You have been invited to meet with a local council. They are designing a new playground and want to make it an all-inclusive playground, for all ages and all abilities. The council want your advice to help them design this playground.

The topic of money comes up and it is mentioned that an all-inclusive playground will cost much more than simply installing a ‘regular’ playground.

Scenario 2:

A local football club has asked you to work with them to help them create a disability football program.

You’ve been helping them create this program and it seems to be going really well, however it is very much separated from the rest of the club.

Scenario 3:

You have noticed that a lot of the local council documents and events flyers are not accessible. E.g. Very wordy, small prints and hard to read font types and size, unable to be converted to different formats etc.
